What is Music?

I ask myself this question sometimes, "What is Music?". A lot of people have different and diverse opinions on this subject. Music has been around for as long as anyone can remember. Why do people listen and compose music though? Here's a list of reasons that I believe to be the reason as to what Music is:

  1. A Way Of Life - Some people say that music is a way of life, that it speaks to them. I'm not too sure on how to explain it, but I agree with this statement.

  2. Expressing Feelings - This is definitely by far the most popular reason as to why people listen and compose music. The power to express oneself through music is really helpful when one cannot express it through speech. Through the mood set by the song, you can tell what the person is feeling at that moment. Whether it being the emotion of anger, joy, sad, playful and so on. You can also tell a person's emotion through the lyrics of the songs as well in some cases. If the person is listening to We Belong Together by Mariah Carey, you can tell that the person is missing someone he or she loves dearly. This is not an exact science as there are still other variables you need to consider like maybe the song has a nice beat or the songs is just nice to hear. If you're a composer, you could be like many artists and write your experinces in songs. Like say, a person who dumped you for another person who's more popular than you. Write a song about it, get famous, and when that person is begging you for a second chance say something like, "Sorry, I don't date unpopular people" or "No thanks, I'm not desperate enough to say yes."

  3. Escape - Some people listen to music to escape from reality. It's a relaxation technique, like Yoga. They don't want to think about their problems so they listen to music and avoid thinking about it.

  4. Communication - Music can be a way to communicate with one another. If you have no hobbies in common, maybe you share the same music interest and that allows people to interact with one another. Even if you're from different countries and speak in different languages, music can break through the social barriers resulting in bonds of friendships being formed all over the world.

  5. Entertainment - In any party you host, you need some music to get it started now don't you? If you disagree with this statement, please take a class in how to throw a party known as PTY 101. Think about it, without music, it's going to be a really, really dull black & white life. Music can provide you with the right colors to complete the picture making it more interesting to the eyes of humanity.

  6. Social Reforming - Some music have hidden messages within them or maybe even an obvious one. The message could be something like how we should join the fight on cancer, how we should not ignore the social problems going on around the world, or even on how to destroy your properties to release some stress. Hey, it does work you know. Releasing stress through destroying some stuffs lying around the house, especially if it's own by someone you dislike.
So far, these are the reasons I could think of at the moment. For me, I especially believe in reason number 2, 3 and 5 because that's why I love music a lot. How about you guys? What do you believe music is?

Migraines

I hate having migraines. It's so annoying. Feels as if someone is hammering my head away with a giant steel hammer on an anvil. I had a rather nasty one today. It started in the afternoon and is still going on right now actually. As if the migraine wasn't already bad enough, I'm going through some emotional bomb this month which makes my migraines a whole lot worse than it already is. I wish this thing would just go away but unfortunately for me, it's hereditary so I'm stuck with it for God knows how long.

So far, only a few techniques seem to be working for me to lessen the pain. One is staying away from any bright lights which is a seriously hard thing to do in college as almost every spot have at least a dozen of lights above it. Second is staying away from crowds which is another hard thing to do as most of my usual hangout places are crowded. So in order to avoid the crowds, I mostly stay outside the building or in one of the secluded areas in college. Third is by doing something that relaxes you, which in my case was listening to music. I usually blast my music to max volume when it gets really bad so that I can ignore the pain and focus only on the music. It actually works, but some of my friends are worried that I would be going deaf soon.

Time to go and do some work before I try and go off to dreamland, see ya people.

Saving up

I've been told by my friends that I seem to save up my money more than I used to. They were wondering how come they don't see me eating a subway or drinking a starbucks anymore. Truth be told, I'm broke from buying birthday presents for some people and buying books for myself. That costed a bomb.

So now, instead of spending about RM10-RM14 for a meal, I spend only RM5-RM7 instead. I need to save up more right now as someone's birthday is coming up real soon. I need to get the gift asap. Luckily, I already know what to get for the person, but I'm not sure if I got the right type of it. Oh well, it's the thought that counts right? If the person likes it, then it would be a good plus.

I also need to save up for this Sunday as my old Form 5 class is going to have a class reunion and everyone has to chip in to pay for the food. Good investment I'd say. Hopefully I'll still have enough to spend for myself. If not, then I guess I'll just have to be a hobo at college.

Bowling

Bowling use to be my favorite past time when I was around 7 years old. Mostly because it was a family night sort of thing. We'd occasionally play bowling with each other to have fun and bond. My dad was the best bowler in the family at the time and I'd always try to beat his score. I was the third best bowler next to my mom.

He set the bar at 246 points in a game, and my best at the time was still only 160. But, after my dad died, the family night just stopped. I still continued playing bowling occasionally with some of my cousins or by myself, but my family never got together to play it again. I tried to beat my dad's score until I was 12, but the highest I could go was 193. When I started high school, I lost interest in playing bowling as well. For the past 6 years, I've only bowled about, 3-4 times when my cousins or my friends ask me to come along.

Part of me wished that I didn't stop bowling and continued, but the other part of me didn't want to continue without my idol. Maybe when I see him up there, we'll have a bowling competition again like we used to.

I Miss You. . .

I miss your smile,
I miss your voice,
I miss the late nights watching movies with you,
I miss the maggie mees that you cooked for us,
I miss the days we played bowling together,
I miss the times we go to the lottery place together,
I miss the way you yelled at me for doing something wrong,
I miss the way you supported me in everything I do,
I miss the way you cheered me up when I'm down,
I miss all the things you did to make me happy,
I miss all the talks that you and I shared,
I miss how you made everything seemed safe,
I miss how you'd spend time with me,
I miss the way you laughed,
I miss the ways we celebrate our birthdays at midnight,
I miss the chaos and mayhem we got from buying gifts in the family,
I miss the way you protected me,
I miss hanging out with you,
I miss the way you answered my questions,
Most of all, I miss you...

In loving memory of Steven Zahairi. Happy birthday Pa...

Busy Weekend

This weekend seems to be quite a busy weekend I've had up to date. There were a few Ed Board related matters that I have to take care of and still am by the way, finishing off some assignments that I've been putting off for awhile, and study for some upcoming tests in the not so distant future.

I've just started on my part of the group assignment and it took me 1 hour just to finish up one point out of the 8 points. Looks like I won't be sleeping anytime soon. Tests are going to be bombarded on me soon, so I better prepare myself for that fast.

There's still the matter of finishing up some of the articles for the March Issue of the INTI Insider that I still haven't written yet. I have to get on that right after I finish up my assignment. Unfortunately, there are numerous things for me to do and there seems to be a depleting timeline which makes it all worse. Then again, that is the case with all students around the world now isn't it? No time for games, its time for work!

Dreams...

Dreams are such random things aren't they? I for one didn't expect to get one just yesterday. For the past... 2 weeks I think, I've been able to sleep for only 1-3 hours max. I finally got a good night's rest yesterday of 8 hours, but it comes with a price.

I had a dream that I didn't think I would still have, which is kind of... weird. The dream was a remembrance of an event in the past and what might have happen afterwards if things were different back then. It must have something to do with the "signs" I was seeing last week but, it just felt like it meant something.

They say that dreams are windows to the future. What if what I saw in that dream was to be reality in time. I wouldn't know how to react to that honestly. I guess we just have to wait and see if it will either be just another sweet dream, or a harsh reality.
